This tale of a soldier’s self-reliance during the Spanish American War is history’s greatest motivational lesson, now collected with Elbert Hubbard’s most treasured inspirational works. A Message to Garcia touched so profound a chord in readers that, after its publication in 1899, it became one of the most widely read works in human history. A Message to Garcia tells the story of an American soldier charged with delivering a critical message to a leader of Cuban rebel forces during the Spanish American War. In Hubbard’s account, he delivered the urgent missive with no questions asked, no complaining, and no hedging. The enduring and almost unbelievably simple message of the essay is this: When asked to perform a task, don’t ask How...? or Why...? or Wouldn’t it be better if,/I . . . ? Just do it—and you will become more valued and respected than you ever imagined possible.

Cast about in your mind and recall incidents A Message to suit No advertiser has ever had the TO Garcia talent to force a thoroughly bad book upon the market and make it sell. Ten thousand dollars invested in newspaper advertising will start an inquiry for any nostrum or brand of goods, but a moribund book can never be galvanized into life. What men call "luck" or "chance" is the result of law not understood. And the luck that makes a book "go" is regulated by a law that no advertising expert has yet been able to control. Mystery enshrouds it all. The man who by his genius can blow this mist away and place his hand upon the law that controls the popularity of a good book, shall have riches and honor and undying renown. CONSECRATED LIVES ERE's a thought, Dearie, A Message that I give to you because TO GARCIA I have n't a very firm grasp upon it myself. In order to clarify my mind I explain to you if And thus, probably, do I give you something which is already yours. Grateful? of course you are--there! if if The thought is this: --but before I explain it let me tell of what a man saw in a certain cottage in Denmark. And it was such a little white-washed cottage, too, with a single, solitary rose bush clambering over the door! An Artist, his Wife and their Little Girl lived there. There were four rooms, only, in this cottage--a kitchen, a bedroom, a workroom & the Other Room. The kitchen was for cooking, the bedroom for sleeping, the workroom for work, and the Other Room was where the...

This candid essay by one of the nation's leading businessmen originally appeared in American Magazine in November 1916. In it, Charles Schwab, one-time president of Carnegie Steel, U.S. Steel, and Bethlehem Steel, offered his secrets for success. Surprisingly, he didn't believe that genius was required -- he believed in hard work. "For thirty-six years I have been moving among workingmen in what is now the biggest branch of American industry, the steel business," Schwab wrote. "In that time it has been my good fortune to watch most of the present leaders rise from the ranks, ascend step by step to places of power. These men, I am convinced, are not natural prodigies. They won out by using normal brains to think beyond their manifest daily duty." Thanks to his appreciation of devoted workers, Schwab placed the ability to succeed in any employee's hands. More of Schwab's surprising insights are contained in this fascinating look at the path to success, written by one who traveled it. CHARLES M. SCHWAB (1862-1939) joined Carnegie Steel in 1879 and became president when he was 35, working closely with Andrew Carnegie. He sold the company to J.P. Morgan, and became president of Morgan's new corporation, U.S. Steel. Schwab later ran Bethlehem Steel, a company known for its efficiency and competitiveness. During World War I, Schwab became Director-General of the Emergency Fleet Corporation for the U.S. government.
