Stand tall, intrepid student. Destiny awaits. Updated for the New SAT This new edition of the Math Guide has been updated, rather painstakingly, to reflect the realities of the new SAT coming March 2016. This book was not rushed to market to take advantage of interest in the new exam. I took my time, and hopefully I got it right. Chapters are broken into five major sections: Techniques, Heart of Algebra, Passport to Advanced Math, Problem Solving and Data Analysis, and Additional Topics in Math. Each chapter concludes with a reference list of similar questions from official practice tests. Practice questions are designated as either “Calculator” or “No calculator.” Students will be forbidden from using their calculators for one whole section of the new SAT. Emphasis is placed on nimbleness—the ability to approach problems in multiple ways to find the one that works best. Calculator solutions and shortcuts are provided where appropriate. With the completion of my last publication, the AP Calculus prep book, all of my math books, including SAT Math, SAT II Math Level1 and II, and AP Calculus AB.BC are now complete. While creating this series of math texts has brought great pleasure to my career, my only wish is that these books will help the many students who are preparing for college entrance. Since 1992, I have had the honor and the pleasure of working with numerous students and realized the need for prep books that can simply explain the fundamentals of mathematics. These books are built on many years of research and experience in each field. Most importantly, the questions in these books focus on building a solid understanding of basic mathematical concepts. Without understanding these solid foundations, it will be difficult to score well on these exams. These books emphasize that any difficult math question can completely be solved with a solid understanding of basic concepts. As the old proverb says, “Where there is a will, there is a way.” I still remember vividly one fifth-grader who was the last in his class who eventually ended up at Harvard University seven years later. I cannot stress enough how such perseverance of the endless quest to master mathematical concepts and problems will triumph. Persistent effort in finding answers to simple and complex mathematical questions is guaranteed to yield fruitful results. You may sometimes find that the explanations in these books might not be sufficient. In such a case, you can email me at [email protected] and I will do my best to provide a more detailed explanation. Additionally, as you work on these books, please notify me if you encounter any grammatical or typographical errors so that I can provide an update version. Per requests from students all over the world who have benefitted from my publications, I am currently working on a video of this series. You will be able to view my classes via internet in 2013. It is my great wish that all students who work on these books can reach their ultimate goals and enter the college of their dreams.

This volume presents the reader with a stimulating tapestry of essays exploring the nature of personal autonomy, self-determination, and agency, and their role in human optimal functioning at multiple levels of analysis from personal to societal and cross-cultural. The starting point for these explorations is self-determination theory, an integrated theory of human motivation and healthy development which has been under development for more than three decades (Deci & Ryan, 2000). As the contributions will make clear, psychological autonomy is a concept that forms the bridge between the dependence of human behavior on biological and socio-cultural determinants on the one side, and people’s ability to be free, reflective, and transforming agents who can challenge these dependencies, on the other. The authors within this volume share a vision that human autonomy is a fundamental pre-condition for both individuals and groups to thrive, and that without understanding the nature and mechanisms of autonomous agency vital social and human problems cannot be satisfactory addressed. This multidisciplinary team of researchers will collectively explore the nature of personal autonomy, considering its developmental origins, its expression within relationships, its importance within groups and organizational functioning, and its role in promoting to the democratic and economic development of societies. The book is aimed toward developmental, social, personality, and cross-cultural psychologists, towards researchers and practitioners’ in the areas of education, health and medicine, social work and, economics, and also towards all interested in creating a more sustainable and just world society through promoting individual freedom and agency. This volume will provide a theoretical and conceptual account of the nature and psychological mechanisms of personal motivational autonomy and human agency; rich multidisciplinary empirical evidence supporting the claims and propositions about the nature of human autonomy and capacities for self-regulation; explanations of how and why different psychological and socio-cultural conditions may play a role in promoting or undermining people’s autonomous motivation and well-being, discussions of how the promotion of human autonomy can positively influence environmental protection, democracy promotion and economic prosperity.
