Now available from Thomas Wolfe’s original publisher, the final novel by the literary legend, that “will stand apart from everything else that he wrote” (The New York Times Book Review)—first published in 1940 and long considered a classic of twentieth century literature. A twentieth-century classic, Thomas Wolfe’s magnificent novel is both the story of a young writer longing to make his mark upon the world and a sweeping portrait of America and Europe from the Great Depression through the years leading up to World War II. Driven by dreams of literary success, George Webber has left his provincial hometown to make his name as a writer in New York City. When his first novel is published, it brings him the fame he has sought, but it also brings the censure of his neighbors back home, who are outraged by his depiction of them. Unsettled by their reaction and unsure of himself and his future, Webber begins a search for a greater understanding of his artistic identity that takes him deep into New York’s hectic social whirl; to London with an uninhibited group of expatriates; and to Berlin, lying cold and sinister under Hitler’s shadow. He discovers a world plagued by political uncertainty and on the brink of transformation, yet he finds within himself the capacity to meet it with optimism and a renewed love for his birthplace. He is a changed man yet a hopeful one, awake to the knowledge that one can never fully “go back home to your family, back home to your childhood…away from all the strife and conflict of the world…back home to the old forms and systems of things which once seemed everlasting but which are changing all the time.”

Karley and Kelsey may be sisters, but their personalities are polar opposites! Karley the younger sister is a drama queen in school as well as home and can never sit still for a minute. Her older sister {Karley was 10 and her sister Kelsey was 12} is calm, cool and almost always collected. The preteen girls bicker as sisters do, but they are about to need each other more than ever. Their father’s company shuts down and he soon finds another job in another state—Tennessee. This means the entire family has to uproot their lives in Michigan and move miles away from the only home they have ever known. Karley and Kelsey are devastated by the news, but they have no choice. They reluctantly accept the news and begin packing. The first day in a new school is a disaster for both girls—but Karley has a harder time adjusting. No familiar friends, no family {the grandparents, cousins, etc were very close}, and she soon begins to fall into signs of depression while Kelsey seems to adjust much more quickly. But then things seem to happen—a lost puppy, tryouts for the soccer team, and a mystery! Though it is the new friendship of Willie, a deaf boy from school, that makes Karley realize just how blessed her life is. Will Tennessee ever truly become her home? With important themes of friendship, family, and acceptance, HOME AGAIN, is a warm-hearted story filled with fundamental life lessons on courage, commitment, and forgiveness

But when his nephew became his 24/7 responsibility literally overnight, Mark Chandler knew things had to change. And he needed help. Cedar Kennedy cured troubled kids, a reputation that prompted Mark to seek out the psychologist. Ordinarily their paths never would have crossed, she the silk-and-suits-wearing doctor, he the dusty-jeans-wearing construction-company owner. But Mark knew Cedar was the one. The one to help Joey face his fears. The one to make their house a home—if only he could get the good doctor to break her rules…and battle her own demons.

What happens when people return to the land of their birth after decades away? The migrants' journey is a well-told story but much less is known about those who return. Why do they go back? What is it like to be “back home”? Home Again is a collection of contemporary real-life stories of men and women who have returned to the Caribbean island of Dominica. Their feelings and experiences, expressed in their own words, link the challenges of the past to both the positive aspects of return – a sense of belonging and well-being – and also to its difficulties – of rejection and frustration. Compelling, moving and intensely personal, Home Again is a revealing insight into the lives of these pioneering migrants.

Home, Again! narrates the story of a European mother and her Indo-European son, who are struggling to understand who they are, against the backdrop of events in Europe and India. Angela Guttenberg, a twenty-two-year-old Austrian woman, graduates in anthropology from the University of Vienna in 1933. Disenchanted with Europe because of Hitler’s rise, as well as her lover’s conversion to Nazism, she sails to India for her post-graduate research. And she goes to Jejuri, a temple town in the Deccan famous for the folk culture of the sun-god, Khandoba, as well as for the concentration of the “Dhangar Samaj,” a nomadic community of shepherds, who are his worshippers. While researching the Dhangar culture, she falls in love with a Dhangar with whom she has a son. When her son, Haldiram Johann Holkar, a self-described mongrel child with a hybrid name, grows up, he goes to England for higher education. There, in the early 1960s, he sees the ugliness of British racism, as well as the glory of British liberalism. Upon his return to India, he begins to see the inadequacies of his people. And driven by his own modern vision for India, he confronts religious extremists on a day of communal tension in the Bombay of 1966—only to be killed by them. At the end, Angela Guttenberg-Holkar, now middle-aged at fifty-five, returns to Vienna as she had gone to India—disenchanted with political life, struggling with her identity. The story progresses primarily through narratives and dialogues and, occasionally, through exchanges of letters, moving from one landscape to the other—from Vienna to Jejuri, then back to Europe, finally back to India—as the mother and the son strive to define who they are in a world in which diverse cultures meet to produce complicated identities.

I was the child who stood quietly in corners and listened. I observed. I watched people and remembered the events—what was said, what I saw. As I grew up, I remembered those incidents, happenings, and stories; and I loved to share them with friends and students. Over the years, when people heard my stories, they always wanted to hear more and often told me I should write a book with my stories. After many years of listening to people tell me to write, I wrote this book about the start of my life in a little town in Monett, Missouri. I have written about my parents, my hometown, people I knew, and incidents I observed. The book is filled with my love for this little town and all the people I knew. I am happy to now share those stories with each of my readers. Home again.

"This study focuses on the representation of the family in American drama, in particular, on various uses and conventions of the figure of the prodigal husband or son. It considers the lineage and function of this figure from the writings of Augustine, medieval iconography, Renaissance prodigal son plays, and temperance melodramas to such contemporary manifestations as television talk shows, the Recovery Movement, and plays by contemporary writers including Spalding Gray, Ntozake Shange, and Cherrie Moraga."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc.
