This interview study examined perceptions of tenure track nursing faculty currently involved, or previously involved, as mentees in nursing departments in order to gather their reports about characteristics of their mentoring relationships, as well as the benefits and shortcomings of the mentoring they experienced. This occurred within seven baccalaureate schools of nursing in a single east coast state. The major conclusions were: 1. Mentors promote interpersonal bonding by serving as guides and resources for their mentees, which results in mentees freely dialoguing with department members. 2. Creating an environment of social support for new faculty mentees involves clearly defining expectations, inviting members to participate with mentors and other university leaders at meetings both at the university, as well as the surrounding communities. It is also important for the department of nursing to ensure that mentors are fully available to provide mentees with opportunities to listen, give advice, and provide feedback. 3. Mentors need to expose their mentees to opportunities for active participation in research, applying for grants, networking, and discussions about internal review board processes, as well as demands placed on nurse educators, as opposed to nurse clinicians. Discussion of all these topics should be incorporated into the department faculty and school of nursing meetings, which mentees should attend. 4. Departmental and school history needs to be communicated to new nursing faculty formally, rather than allowing such information to be only transmitted informally. 5. Mentors must be accessible to mentees when they first start their jobs. How responsive they are and how much time is devoted to the new mentoring relationship is very important, as is responding to mentees needs in a positive fashion by devoting time for one-to-one meetings weekly or every other week. These one-to-one interactions help to facilitate bonding between mentor and mentee.

In 2009, the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners report identified more than 125, 000 Nurse Practitioners (NP) working in the United States. As the number of NPs increases and their role expands, questions about their work satisfaction and ability to learn and perform the role arise. Since NPs have to combine a nursing philosophy with a medical care model, it is often difficult to mediate the two approaches and fully understand the role. Mentoring has been successfully used to facilitate role transition and role understanding for nurses and physicians, but has been rarely studied in NPs. Although widely used in nursing and medicine, the concept of mentoring is poorly defined and often used interchangeably with coaching and precepting, thus making program design and evaluation difficult. The purpose of this study was to develop a theory of mentoring for NPs in a hospital setting. A total of 18 participants (eight mentors and eight mentees) were interviewed to learn about their experience with mentoring. A three component mentoring process emerged from the data: forming the relationship, developing the relationship, and outcomes. While some of the themes identified in this study have been previously discussed, others like journey, career path, gain a friend, and defining self have never been associated with mentoring. Nurse practitioners participating in this study were continuously defining both personally and professionally in an effort to improve themselves. The journey to a successful mentoring relationship required hard work, commitment, and trust. When mentoring participants took the time to know each other and were able to build trust, the relationship moved beyond the traditional framework of formal mentoring into informal mentoring and friendship.

A Nurse-Mentoring Program based on Peplau's Interpersonal Relationship Theory (1952) and Erickson, Tomlin and Swain Modeling and Role Modeling Theory (1983) was implemented to promote optimum health and educational outcomes among children at high risk for intergenerational incarceration. The aim of this study was to reflect on the existing strength and effectiveness in the nurse-mentoring program for children with incarcerated parents, to lead the nurse-mentors in discovering what is important, and build a collective vision of the preferred future for mentoring this population. Through the appreciative inquiry (AI) process, a type of action research, nurses transformed their practice in assisting children toward healthy behaviors. Participants were RNs who enrolled in a Baccalaureate program and worked for at least 60 hours in the role of nurse-mentor. Data were collected through individual interviews and focus groups that resulted in consensus for an action plan. A dialectic-hermeneutic approach was employed to interpret the texts of participants who experienced working with Children of Promise and construct personal meaning from them. An action plan was implemented and evaluated after three months. Based on the evaluation, conclusions were drawn and a collective view emerged regarding best nurse-mentoring practices for this program and implications for other programs for children with incarcerated parents. The nursing theories were effective in helping participants to establish relationships with children in the context of mentoring.
