Imagine the hushed excitement and the vivid anticipation of a child on Christmas Eve. How much more intense that anticipation must have been for those who waited for the wonder of the very first Christmas. From the ancient prophets to the three kings, from the angel Gabriel to the stalwart Joseph, Katarina Katsarka Whitley imagines their astonishment and joy at the events unfolding around them. In her inimitable style, Whitley places herself in the hearts and minds of the biblical characters–both real and imagined–who played a part in the Christmas narrative. She weaves stories, solidly based in Scripture, at once compelling and thought-provoking. The voices of her characters lead us closer to the Christ Child and deepen the meaning of the season of Advent for twenty-first century readers.

The recently released Tim Robbins film Cradle Will Rock reawakened worldwide audiences to composer Marc Blitzstein's runaway Broadway hit of 1937, and to the exciting times he lived in. Blitzstein went on to write Regina (based on Lillian Hellman's "The Little Foxes"), the definitive translation of Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht's Threepenny Opera, and an enormous amount of other music based squarely in American and Broadway traditions. Mark the Music is an engaging biography of this larger-than-life composer that reads like a novel. Practically every page features an illuminating and revealing pen portrait of the most important creative personalities in American culture—Orson Welles, John Houseman, Ernest Hemingway, Paul Robeson, Sean O'Casey, Agnes de Mille, Lotte Lenya, Melvyn Douglas, Shirley Both, Leonard Bernstein, Aaron Copland, Earl Robinson, Rudolf Bing, and many more. A vibrant journey through mid-20th century America comes to life through the eyes and experience of Marc Blitzstein. The issues that marked Blitzstein's day—censorship, repression, war—are all with us today. This is a story of passion, defiance, glory and tragedy, and ultimately of faith in democratic American values expressed through the arts.

The book bestowed upon her is reflected on Acts 1:4,5 "being assembled together with them, Jesus commanded that they should not depart, but wait for the promise of the Father, which says he, you have heard of me. For John truly baptized with water but you shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence." After years of praying, fasting and waiting she received instruction to go forth "taking heed to herself, and to all the flock, over which the Holy Ghost has made you overseers, to feed the flock (church) of God, purchased with His own blood." (Acts 20:28) "Behold I send the promise of my Father upon you: tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high" (Luke 24:49). The Spirit of God being upon her, He anointed her to preach good tidings unto the meek, bind up the broken hearted, proclaim liberty to the captives, the opening of the prison to them that are bound, proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord, and the day of vengeance of our God, comfort all that mourn, appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, give unto them beauty for ashes, oil of joy for mourning, the garments of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called the trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, THAT HE MAY BE GLORIFIED! In Matthew 10:8, Jesus commanded that she "heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely you have received, freely give." This assignment from the Lord Jesus Christ and commission is found in Matthew 28:19 "Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:"

It's not that I'm lost Or don't know who I am. I'm where I belong and happy. But those questions, Always questions but never answers. I'm a wife, a Mother, and a Grandmother. I'm strong, independent, a survivor. My faith is true and I love life. But those questions. Cathy Crawford knows that expressing feelings can be challenging. In her first collection of poetry, she shares poignant and relatable verse with the hope of helping others not only learn to articulate their own feelings, but also find an identity and purpose in life, just as she has through her poetry. Crawford, who first started writing as a way to work through the emotions of feeling like an outsider in her world, offers a poetic glimpse into her journey through life as she reflects on failure, self-acceptance, memories, grief, love, faith, and family. Through touching lyrical verse, Crawford encourages others to embrace their own unique journey through life, find freedom from their past, and look forward to the future with gratitude. Poems of My Life shares one woman's walk through life as she explores her emotions, learns to love herself, and discovers the secret to living fully.

These two personal essays reveal the thoughts of a mother/teacher struggling to communicate with two of her charges in order to care for them. In “The Other World,” the mother seeks help from Helen Keller’s experiences to understand her son’s sensory issues due to Asperger’s syndrome, such as practically being able to see the bacteria on the wall but not being able to judge traffic well enough to cross the street without fear. “Waiting to Connect,” an award-winning essay, explores the similar traumas shared by the son as a teenager/young adult with AS and one of the mother’s adult ESL students who was politically tortured in his native Pakistan before coming to the United States.

In ministry as in life, we get knocked down. Sometimes, due to our folly or despair or fatigue or external opposition, we stumble and fall. How do we get back up--again and again and again? Resiliency, the ability to bounce back, is a gift of God. Leaders are able to get up and follow the crucified and risen Lord when they are drawn, when they are enchanted by the awesome mystery of the triune God. Discipleship has never been easy. The way, staying on the narrow path that leads to abundant life, is hard. Today, no less than the first disciples, followers of Christ face an array of challenges, not the least of which is disenchantment: "We had hoped he was the one to redeem Israel" (Luke 24:21). Seen through an Enlightenment lens, disenchantment may be more acute and prevalent in our times, but it is not new. We walk our own Emmaus Road. And when we keep walking, when we follow the one who joins us on the Road, eyes are opened, hearts burn, the one standing before us is recognized, and we are sustained for the journey. This collection of theological essays on ministry is an invitation to "run and not be weary . . . to walk and not faint" (Isa 40:31) by walking in wonder with the wholly other God who is near.
